Man arrested for allegedly killing his mother in Beit Shemesh

A woman was killed in her apartment in Beit Shemesh on Friday morning, police officials said, and her son was arrested on suspicion of murdering her.

According to Jerusalem District Police, they received a call shortly after 9:30 a.m. Friday morning from a family member, indicating that someone was attacking the woman inside their apartment in Beit Shemesh. Forces arrived at the scene minutes later and arrested the man, aged 27. Medical officials called to the scene confirmed the death of his mother, who was 52.

Police said the man will appear before a court over the weekend, and they will request that he remain in custody as they continue their investigation.

Investigators have begun gathering evidence in the case, said police, using a mobile forensic laboratory that arrived on the scene shortly after the incident.

According to Hebrew media reports, the family involved is part of the city’s large ultra-Orthodox community. The Ynet news site reported that the mother had nine children in total, some of whom were home at the time of the incident, and one of whom called the police.

“When we arrived at the site, we saw a woman in her 50s who was unconscious, with signs of serious violence,” said Magen David Adom paramedic Moshe Hillel. “We gave her medical treatment and performed resuscitation operations. The injuries were very serious and within a short time we had to determine her death.”

Reports indicate that the woman was stabbed to death, but it is unclear what the weapon was. Neighbors in Beit Shemesh told media outlets that her son had recently been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility.

According to Channel 12 news, the family had only moved to Beit Shemesh several months ago after living in the country’s south, and had recently married off a daughter.
